LEMUR-AG15

Solar Mitigation System

What is
LEMUR-AG15?

LEMUR-AG15 is a novel technology with granted patents GB2592291 & GB2606058, developed to solve Network Rail’s challenges of overheating assets during summer periods. This fully passive system provides a highly efficient protective skin from the effects of electromagnetic waves of solar origin. Adaptable and scalable this technology protects equipment & apparatus housings, buildings & structures and is suited to all outdoor environments and sectors.

The Novel Solution

Network Rail has identified climate change as a significant risk to the UK rail network and has provided the industry with a range of challenge statements. The challenge statements are designed to raise industry awareness and prompt research and development in these critical areas.

LEMUR-AG15 was developed specifically to meet Network Rail’s requirements for a versatile passive thermal management system.

LEMUR-AG15 is an acronym for ‘Low Emissivity Magnetic U Reflector – Aluminium, Glass compound, version 15’. The system took inspiration from the thermal regulation practices of Lemurs, often assumed to be sunbathing, lemurs are in fact pointing their reflective bellies at the sun to thermo-regulate and keep cool on sunny days.

LEMUR-AG15 is a flexible material that can be applied to any housing ranging from impedance bonds, points machine housings, location cases to relocatable buildings. The material blocks c.98% of solar gain due to the properties of the material making the solution completely scalable.

Panels are adhesive backed and laser cut to fit any profile. A standard Network Rail location case can be clad in c.20 minutes using only hand tools.

Once installed LEMUR-AG15 begins to work immediately to reduce high internal and cyclic temperatures. This provides a stable operating temperature which is essential to the operation and reliability of the critical assets installed within the enclosure.

The Journey

Developed Over 3 Years
This invention relates to an electromagnetic reflector and solar mitigation textile fitted to the external surface of outdoor equipment housings. The Invention is a Low emissivity magnetic UV reflector (LEMUR) composed of aluminium and glass compounds supplied with or without structural adhesive tape backing. A total of 15 prototypes were developed before achieving the correct manufacturing formula and therefore this product is forthwith referred to as LEMUR-AG15. The material of the components to be shielded are of known construction within the sectors of Railways, Highways, telecoms, Power transmission and distribution.

In hot sunny climates, unprotected housings are subject to internal ambient temperature rises outside of the internal equipment’s scope of design, leading to thermal failures.

It is therefore the primary object of this invention to provide shielding of electromagnetic waves from the sun by cladding an existing, or new, steel or composite housing with LEMUR-AG15. The product is affixed to the outside of the housing to reflect and dissipate the sun’s energy before this energy radiates into the housing’s airspace increasing internal temperatures above external ambient.

LEMUR-AG15 is affixed in such a way that it clads the outer surface of the housing, and/or panels reflecting the sun’s electromagnetic radiation away from the structure during those hours of the day when the sun’s energy is most intense. LEMUR-AG15 can be installed easily and without the need to open the enclosure doors, or access panels, and does not require the system to be de-energised and taken out of operational service. There is no requirement to drill or remove panels of the housing nor a requirement for any specialist tools. The material can be supplied in log rolls or laser cut to specific panel patterns and supplied as a kit of parts to coat a single housing.

Another object of this invention is to provide effective thermal insulating of housings negating the need for additional heaters during cold periods. An increase in energy efficiency can be obtained along with a reduction in service costs and maintenance tasks.

Legacy Location Case – Full and Half loc

Overview

In the 1980s British Rail developed a standard equipment enclosure commonly known as a location case. The standard loc is available in 2 sizes BRS-SM850 (full loc) and BRS-SM860 (half loc). The loc is constructed from sheet metal and has no active or passive thermal management. A standard lock on each set of doors provides a basic level of security. Cable management is provided through an open foundation, typically constructed from precast concrete.

In 2023 Network Rail issued a new enclosure standard NR/L2/SIG/19820-K02 defining the Next Generation location case.

Performance

Standard location cases lack any passive or active thermal management. As a result, the operating environment within the loc is prone to high temperatures and high cyclic temperatures. Peak temperatures have been recorded c.25oC above the local ambient temperature.

LEMUR-AG15 can be applied in the factory or to operational assets. LEMUR-AG15 provides passive thermal management blocking c.98% of solar gain. After application peak and cyclic temperatures are significantly reduced. Peak temperatures are typically reduced to within c.10oC above the local ambient temperature.

Certification & Compliance

Following rigorous testing and field trials Network Rail issued a full product acceptance certificate PA05/07421 for the use of LEMUR-AG15 on any structure or housing on the UK network as required. In addition to passive thermal management LEMUR-AG15 also provides a wipe clean, anti-graffiti finish reducing the time and effort required to remove unsightly graffiti.

Key Features

  • Full Network Rail certification PA05/07421
  • No routine maintenance required
  • No power supply required
  • Can be fitted to any housing
  • Fully passive thermal management, blocking c.98% of solar gain
  • Significant reduction to internal peak temperature and cyclic temperature
  • Factory or Trackside installation
  • Simple installation, requiring only hand tools
  • Rapid installation c.20 minutes (standard full loc)

Field Application

LEMUR-AG15 is ideally suited to both new and legacy installations. It can be pre-fitted to a standard loc in the factory. For the tens of thousands of existing assets, LEMUR-AG15 can be quickly fitted to any housing, immediately blocking c.98% of solar gain. Alternatively new projects could opt to install one of the Next Generation location cases.

Next Generation Location Case – Henry Williams

Overview

Henry Williams’ Next Generation Location Case, developed in collaboration with Haide Technologies, combines traditional build quality with cutting-edge passive thermal design. It integrates LEMUR-AG15 to satisfy NR/L2/SIG/19820-K02 requirements.

Performance

Independent testing confirmed that the case maintained internal temperatures well below Network Rail’s requirements. With 500W internal load at 40°C ambient, the internal case temperature was maintained below 48°C.

Certification & Compliance

Following rigorous testing and verification, the Henry Williams enclosure received full PA05/07681 product approval certification from Network Rail. The enclosure exceeds expectations for thermal resilience, anti-graffiti coating, cable entry design, and modular internal layout suitable for modern signalling equipment.

Key Features

  • Certified to NR/L2/SIG/19820-K02
  • Security rating to LPS 1175, classification SR2
  • Fully passive thermal management using LEMUR-AG15
  • Maintains c.47°C with up to 500W internal equipment losses

Field Application

The Tyrone Fabrications enclosure is ideally suited to both legacy and new infrastructure projects. It enables safe housing of temperature-sensitive equipment such as electronics and batteries. High peak and cyclic temperature ranges are significantly reduced where legacy A/C cooling is no longer viable. The passive design simplifies deployment and reduces maintenance burden across the network.

How is LEMUR AG-15 Installed?

The container/housing or building is measured. This can be done digitally with drawings, or alternatively an engineer can attend the site to measure any container/housings or buildings.

Once the measurements have been verified, each panel/wall has a pattern cut out to cover any possible direct sunlight. The patterns are then sent to the customer who can then install the cut patterns directly onto the source of application. The cut parts have an ‘easy peel’ which will be clearly visible. The installer then ensures the cut parts are lined up correctly before peeling and applying. Haide Technologies recommends installers use magnets to hold and align each panel. The magnets will help keep the sheet of LEMUR-AG15 in place as the installer is applying it to the loc case or structure.
